During the season of cold and flu going around, I wanted to provide a few at home remedies that are easy to make and healthier alternatives to medication. These remedies can be taken daily as preventatives or when the first signs of symptoms appear.
Remedy #1
Elderberry Syrup
Ingredients:
1 cup dried elderberries
4 cups water
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp ground ginger
1/2 tsp ground gloves
1 tbsp rosehips (optional)
3/4 cup raw honey
1/4 cup arrowroot powder
Instructions:
Add elderberries, water, and all spices into a large pot
Set to medium heat and bring to a boil
Once boiling, reduce heat to medium-low heat and simmer for approximately 45 minutes or until the mixture has reduced to approximately half
Alternate option: if you prefer a thicker consistency, you can create a slurry using 1/4 cup arrowroot powder and 1/2 cup water in separate bowl to add once the elderberry syrup has been boiling for 30 minutes. Then allow mixture to simmer for 10-15 minutes, then proceed with instructions below
Remove from heat and allow to cool
Once cooled to room temperature, use a mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain the liquid from berries. Use a spoon to press into the berries to release liquid
Add honey to liquid and stir to combine (can use 1/2 cup or 1 cup if want it sweeter)
Pour into a storage jar, seal tightly and refrigerate up to 3 months
