Magnesium

Updated: Jan 25

Magnesium is the most important mineral in the human body. It is incredible, being responsible for about 400 enzymic functions. It is something that most everyone is lacking greatly in their body, leading to many different issues, health problems and illnesses. There are many different way that we can take magnesium into the body, many benefits and many signs of deficiency that I will discuss.

The benefits of magnesium are great and there are so many, but I will list a few and break down what they do.

Benefits:

Bone health- helps bones absorb calcium to maintain strength and reduce risk of fractures and osteoporosis

Migraines- helps relax blood vessels which can reduce migraine pain

Muscles- helps with muscle spasm and muscle cramps

Cardiovascular disease- regulates blood pressure, prevents cardiac arrhythmias

Diabetes- low magnesium levels are associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Helps regulate insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism

Sleep- helps regulate sleep by relaxing muscles and calming the mind

Anxiety- helps regulate stress responses and cortisol levels

Energy production- helps convert food into energy

Magnesium is responsible for many workings within the body that we are unaware of. It is very important for the heart because there are two minerals that cause the heart to beat, calcium restricts and magnesium relaxes. That is extremely important.

Magnesium is a water hungry molecule which means it absorbs water into itself. One of the best ways to take in the mineral is through Celtic Salt, by placing a few crystals on the tongue, the minerals are released and the mucous membranes in your mouth absorb the minerals and takes it to the cell. Once the magnesium is in the cells, it pulls the water inside. Celtic salt has 3 forms of magnesium, magnesium sulfate, magnesium chloride, and magnesium bromide.

A key sign to note when you are dehydrated even when you are drinking plenty of water, and I mean dehydrated in the cells, you are steady running to the bathroom after drinking water. This means that the water you are drinking is not being properly absorbed into the cells, there isn't enough magnesium in the cells to help absorb the water.

Another form to intake a necessary amount of several magnesium forms is through Shilajit. This is filled with 85+ minerals that the body needs. Placing a pea size in some warm water and drinking that is a great way to get a sufficient amount of magnesium for the body and cells.

There are also magnesium sprays and oils that can be used topically. Magnesium spray is a great alternative for deodorant, can help reduce odor over time, can be used on the body for cramps, on the stomach for menstrual cramps and on the feet to be absorbed effectively as well. Magnesium oil is a great form for muscle cramps and tightness, massaged into target area to help relax and ease the muscles.

One important thing to know when being more mindful of magnesium in the body is that caffeine leaches both calcium and magnesium out of the body. Therefore causing dehydration, heart malfunction, imbalanced heart beats and many more.

Signs of magnesium deficiency:

Muscle cramps

Muscle weakness

Fatigue

Irregular heartbeat

Paresthesia

Seizures

High blood pressure

Abnormal eye movement

Loss of appetite

Nausea

Morning sickness

Tremors

Constipation

Low mood

Migraines

And many more

Magnesium is essential in the body and the one mineral above all else that we should focus on ensuring we have sufficient amounts of. Again there are many ways to be getting magnesium, through tablets, Celtic salt, Shilajit, sprays and oils. I hope you are able to take something from this and take notice to what your body needs and support your body by giving it the essentials needed to lead a healthy life. With all my love and light.
